Periodic grant programs for residential solar PV + battery storage. Recent rounds offered HUF 2.0–2.9M (~€5,000–€7,300) per residential project for combined PV + battery + heat-pump bundles. Highly oversubscribed.
Hungary operates EU-co-financed residential solar grants under various programmatic banners (Napelem Plusz, Otthon Felújítási Támogatás solar component, EU Recovery and Resilience Facility solar tranches). Recent rounds funded combined PV + battery + heat-pump bundles up to HUF 2.0–2.9M per project. Programs run in time-limited application windows with budget allocated first-come-first-served; oversubscription within hours of opening is typical. Eligibility usually requires income testing and existing-residence qualification. Confirm current open programs at palyazat.gov.hu before contracting an installer. The Hungarian residential solar market has been heavily program-driven; payback economics shift dramatically based on whether the homeowner secures a grant tranche or pays full price.
Standard 27% Hungarian VAT applies to most solar equipment. Reduced 5% rate on construction services for new-build residential under specific conditions. No general residential PV VAT exemption.
Hungary applies the EU's highest standard VAT rate at 27% to solar PV equipment. Reduced 5% rate applies to construction services on new-build residential ≤ 150 m² under specific conditions; this rarely covers PV retrofits on existing homes. There is no general residential PV VAT exemption equivalent to Germany's 0% rate. National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) administers the regime. Combined with the relatively low Hungarian retail electricity rate (residential government-regulated price for first ~250 kWh/month at HUF 36/kWh ~ €0.10), residential PV economics are challenging without grant support.
